Baby Skull Development. As the baby’s brain grows, the skull can become more misshapen. Craniosynostosis is a birth defect in which the bones in a baby’s skull join together too early.
It protects the central nervous system, the oral cavity and nasal cavity, the ears and the eyes within its inner, outer and directly related structures. These bony plates cover the brain and are held together by fibrous material. Although the skull appears to be 1 large bone, there are actually several major bones that are connected together.
